Picture this you have a special event coming up, you log into your favorite social media app, and start searching for that 'it" dress the dress that is going to make you stand out from everyone else in the crowd. This occasion is a big moment for you and no simple dress will do, so you search and you search..... or you know exactly what you want because you have been dreaming if this moment for longer than you can remember.
Theres a problem, you cant find the dress any where because what you want is is only in your imagination. Now what?
At this stage you are probably going to look for someone like me! A seamstress or designer to make your dreams come true. A lot of times people are not sure how to go about getting a dress made, as well as the steps, and cost involved in having a one of a kind piece created for them. So follow along with me as I go over all you need to know to start your journey into ordering a custom dress.
The search; Finding someone who can do the work you are looking for, its best to search for local designers that you can visit in person, as well as those who have a place where you can view their work. You want to make sure you are pairing yourself with some one that specializes in the type. of designs you are looking for. Also if you end up setting up an in-person appointment ask to see some of their workmanship up close. In my studio I have several pieces on display as well as current projects, so the clients are able to see my workmanship. Pictures don't always do a dress justice rightly or wrongly.
I like to keep updating my website and google page with new images of my custom order clients as well as behind the scenes images on my Pinterest.
Booking; Most designers require a booking fee to meet for the first time, I charge a small fee for consult that I waive if the client decides to move forward with the piece after the consultation. I offering booking on line, or you can place a call or send me an email. I also allow for clients to submit photo inspiration as well as a deadline (when their event is) to ensure that 1. I'm the right person for the project 2. I can meet their deadline 3. Give them a "soft quote" on what the design might cost.
The consult:
The consultation is almost like an interview for both parties as well as a time to really flesh out the details of the designs. At this time I create a quick sketch as well as go over the details of the dress design. Now is also when I give a firm quote of what the dress will cost. If the client agrees we go on to the next step. If they still need to think about it they are given a print out of their quick sketch as well as the written quote and a two decision making deadline if the dress is for an upcoming event.
The Cost
Cost is definitely a determining factor in having a custom gown made. While there are many options available online and in-store for dresses, custom dresses are an art form where every single detail is planned out for a one-of-a-kind piece. The fabric used is of high quality, hand sewing, and many traditional forms of dressmaking and design are utilized. The designs often take months to complete. It is not something that should be done as a quick resolution because you have run out of options online or in-store. The cost varies depending on the designer and the location the studio resides. Some designs start as low as $300 and can go up to $2500+ depending on the design. When you order custom dresses online without ever trying them on, please be aware you may still need alterations. This should be factored into your budget as well; alterations may also cost a few hundred dollars. My custom dresses start at a minimum of $1,500 as of 2024.
The Sketch
If the client moves forward with the process, that same day I take a 30%-50% non-refundable deposit on the gown. We go over the contract together and both sign. That day I also take measurements as well as a photo of them to use for their sketch. I like for the illustration to look as closely to the actual person as possible so we all have realistic expectations on how the design will look. Next, we set up our first appointment.
Within 24-48 hours, I send the client a digital sketch of their design for approval. Then I order sample fabrics and send them a signed copy of their contract for their records.
First Fittings
The client returns for their first fitting in a mock-up of the dress, usually similar in fabric material. Here, we make adjustments. Sometimes the mock-up has to be modified more than once. This is also when we go over the fabric samples, as well as any beading and trims the dress needs. Nothing is added to the dress without the client's prior approval.
Third to Fourth Fittings
Clients will begin to see the piece come together in their chosen fabrics, truly an amazing time as they watch the process of a dress being made right before their eyes!
The Final Fittings
Usually, changes occur 3 weeks to a month prior to the event date, just fine-tuning and tweaking the process. Throughout the process, a client can decide how they want to pay after the initial deposit: monthly or at every fitting.
The Pick Up
This is the day she has waited for. I take extra care to provide all the extra whimsy I can so that the client has a unique experience. Wooden hangers, personalized tags, and little gifts.
The Big Day
I love to receive photos of clients on their special day. Working closely with a skilled designer to have your dream dress created should be an enchanting, unique experience as you watch our project unfold.
